HOW CAN WE KNOW THE TRUTH?
Can anyone be sure of going to heaven? Can we even be sure that there is a heaven? What happens to a person after death? How can we know the truth about these questions? The Bible is God's written revelation of His truth. This claim is substantiated in many ways. One of the more startling ways is the scores of Biblical prophecies that have been fulfilled. Some prophecies dealt with the rise and fall of nations (see the book of Daniel), others predicted events concerning the first coming of Jesus Christ (His birth place, time period, his death, etc.). Some prophecies even foretold events that have been fulfilled in our present day (i.e. the restoration of Jewish nation to their land). How did the writers know what to predict, and be able to do it without error? They were inspired by God! There are many prophecies in the Scripture concerning the end times, which we believe are now in the process of being fulfilled. The Bible records for us accurate, first hand accounts of the life and teachings of Jesus Christ, as well as many of his disciples. It is the authoritative source for truth.
WHAT IS THE TRUTH ABOUT GOING TO HEAVEN?
Is it enough to just be a good person? What if a person is very religious, is that good enough?
THE BAD NEWS:
The Bible says that everyone has sinned. Sin is breaking God's laws. Every one of us is guilty of that, over and over again. When we compare ourselves against other people, we can look pretty good. But when we compare ourselves against the perfect law of God, we fall far short (Romans 3:23- For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.)
Because of our sin, we deserve to be separated from the Only Almighty, Holy God, forever! No matter how much good we do, our limited goodness cannot take away or pay for our sinful deeds, thoughts, and words. The Bible says that our sin is only paid for by death. (Hebrews 9:22- ...without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.) Many think that they can save themselves through good works, prayers, giving money, being kind, and the like. The Bible says thatit is not by works of righteousness which we have done, but by His mercy He saved us (Titus 3:5). We are also told that it is by grace you are saved, through faith, and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God. Not of works, lest any man should boast (Ephesians 2:8,9).
So we see from God's word that we are sinners, fallen short of what God requires, and that no matter what we do we cannot pay for our sins ourselves. It sounds bad so far.
THE GOOD NEWS:
Fortunately, the story does not end there. Because of His love God provided a way so that sinful humanity could be forgiven, and brought back into the fellowship with God that we enjoyed when Adam and Eve were first created. The way provided was through the Lord Jesus Christ. (See resource Who is Jesus? and Four Spiritual Laws) When He was crucified on the cross, He took all of our sin on Himself, and made the eternal payment for it (1 Peter 2:24- He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; by his wounds you have been healed.).
OUR PART:
So, what must we do? What is our part? It is simply to receive what the Lord Jesus Christ has already done. It is simply to put your trust in the Lord Jesus Christ. Believe that He died on the cross for you, and rose again from the dead. Put your complete trust in Him, and the payment that He made for sins will be applied to your account! You will be forgiven, and headed for heaven. The Gospel of John, chapter 3, verse 16 says, For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in Him, should not perish, but have everlasting life.
CONCLUSION:
You can know you are going to heaven. If you will admit your sinfulness sincerely before God, with a desire to be forgiven and changed, and sincerely put your complete faith and trust in Jesus Christ, then He will save you. He will forgive your sins and come into your life by His Holy Spirit, to begin the wonderful and incredible process of making you into the person He wants you to be.
